Ten primary schools with special educational support areas in the Kenyan district of Thika receive barrier-free sports and play equipment. The Regine Sixt Children's Aid Foundation DRYING LITTLE TEARS supported the procurement of balls, ropes, hoops and other inclusive play materials so that children with disabilities can participate equally in school life.
The play equipment is used as part of a comprehensive educational program by the Dutch organization Stichting Join for Joy. This organization trains primary school teachers in East Africa to create an inclusive learning environment through sports and playful learning methods. The trained teachers use the barrier-free materials to enable children with disabilities to actively participate in lessons and promote their mental, physical and social development.
The program aims to reduce absences and school dropouts as well as reduce stigmatization. Through the combination of specially trained teachers and suitable play materials, children with and without disabilities can learn together. The project was implemented in partnership with the local Macheo's Children Organisation and the Kenyan Ministry of Education.
